Summer Camp Week
During the summer college break, Independent Education decided to try something new–Summer Camp Week! Taking our enthusiasm and love of learning outdoors, we decided to keep our kids engaged, keep them interested, and keep them busy. Most importantly, we did not want our students’ brains to get mushy in their two weeks of freedom.
We started our adventure at Kissimmee’s own Gatorland. It was a beautiful, sweltering Florida day thoroughly enjoyed by all. The best event of the day was not the gator wrestling, the petting zoo, or the escaped flamingo, but learning that our students will spend money to watch Dan “feed this gator his lunch.”
Tuesday was a day at the Museum, with the ladies visiting the exhibits at the Cornell Fine Arts Museum on the Campus of Rollins College, and the gentlemen venturing to The Hurston Museum in Eatonville.
By the middle of the week, we still had not lost our steam. We went to the Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center of Florida. This was an amazing trip! The educational director spent hours of his time answering questions, discussing military, social, and political issues, and holding the attention of our students which is a feat in itself.
The week wrapped up at the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey in Maitland. Despite one student asking ” do you eat the birds when they die?” and his brilliant follow up question, “if you were to eat them, how do you think they would taste?” the trip was a success.

Given the success of the “summer camp week” and how well received it was by all of our willing “campers” there is a good likelihood we may try summer camp part II next year.
